Welcome to Austin. AMD's campus sits in southwest Austin — near MoPac South and Southwest Parkway, right at the edge of Austin's Hill Country corridor. That's a very different Austin than the northwest tech suburbs. You're minutes from Westlake Hills, Barton Creek Greenbelt, and Bee Cave — and 20 minutes from downtown. This guide gives you the honest commute math and neighborhood breakdown for AMD employees in 2026.
AMD's Austin design center at 7171 Southwest Pkwy sits in Austin's southwest corridor — where MoPac meets the Hill Country. This is one of Austin's most scenic tech locations. The Barton Creek Greenbelt trail system is adjacent. Westlake Hills is 10 minutes north on Loop 360. Downtown Austin is 15–20 minutes north on MoPac. And when you head west, you're in Bee Cave and Lakeway Hill Country territory within 20 minutes.
Most Austin tech guides focus on the northwest corridor — Cedar Park, Leander, the Domain. That advice doesn't apply to AMD. The neighborhoods that make sense for AMD employees are almost entirely different: Westlake, Oak Hill, Barton Hills, Circle C, Bee Cave. You're in Austin's greenest, most topographically interesting corridor. The tradeoff: northwest suburbs are off the table commute-wise. The upside: you get Westlake Hills and Barton Creek instead.
AMD's campus is the only major Austin tech campus directly adjacent to the Barton Creek Greenbelt — Austin's crown jewel trail system with 12+ miles of limestone canyon hiking. Employees who live in Barton Hills or Oak Hill can genuinely hike before work, be on the trail at lunch, and still be home for dinner. It's a 5-minute drive from the AMD parking lot to a trailhead.

AMD Austin salaries range from $100K for junior design engineers to $300K+ for principal engineers and management. The southwest Austin corridor spans Austin's widest price range: Westlake Hills at $900K–$2M is AMD's most prestigious option; Oak Hill and Circle C at $420K–$750K offer strong value for families. At $130K–$180K, Circle C and Oak Hill are the sweet spot — good schools, great commute, real neighborhood character.
The southwest corridor's secret advantage: you're getting Hill Country terrain at prices below the northwest suburbs. Circle C Ranch at $500K gets you more home than Cedar Park at $500K, with a shorter AMD commute. Westlake Hills is expensive, but Eanes ISD is legitimately one of the best school districts in Texas — the premium reflects reality.
Full Austin cost of living breakdown →AMD engineers coming from Santa Clara or Fort Collins often have a clear budget in mind. I can run the Westlake vs. Oak Hill vs. Circle C comparison specifically for your compensation and family situation.
Southwest Austin AISD campuses include strong options: Oak Hill Elementary, Mills Elementary (Circle C area), and Bowie HS — one of the stronger AISD high schools. Mixed district-wide, but the southwest campuses consistently rate well. Research by specific address — AISD varies significantly block by block.
Texas's highest-rated suburban school district — consistently top 1–3% statewide. Westlake HS and Hill Country MS are exceptional. Eanes ISD is the single biggest reason engineers choose Westlake over any other AMD-adjacent neighborhood — and it's only 10 minutes from campus. The premium is steep but real.
Outstanding district — Lake Travis HS consistently ranks in Texas's top 10%. A strong choice for families living in Bee Cave or Lakeway. Smaller and more tight-knit than Leander ISD, with very high parent engagement. Worth the extra 10 minutes of commute for the right family.
Small, fast-growing, highly regarded district. Dripping Springs HS has strong academics and athletics. A compelling option for families willing to trade commute distance for exceptional schools and Hill Country lifestyle — particularly for hybrid AMD workers.
Texas has zero state income tax. AMD engineers coming from California or Colorado see an immediate, substantial take-home increase. On a $180K AMD salary, that's $9,000–$15,000 more per year vs. California. On $250K, that gap is $13,000–$22,000 annually. For senior engineers with RSUs vesting, the advantage compounds dramatically.
Texas property taxes run 1.8%–2.4% of assessed value. In Westlake Hills on a $1.2M home, budget $21,600–$28,800/year ($1,800–$2,400/mo). In Circle C at $550K, budget $9,900–$13,200/year ($825–$1,100/mo). Factor this into your mortgage math — it's the biggest sticker shock for California transplants.
AMD RSUs vest as ordinary income for federal purposes. Texas levies zero additional state tax — unlike California's 13.3% top rate. For senior AMD engineers with significant equity, this alone can represent $10,000–$30,000+ per year in additional take-home at each Texas vest event.
Southwest Austin dominates: Oak Hill and Circle C Ranch for families wanting value and a short commute; Westlake Hills for engineers with larger budgets prioritizing Eanes ISD; Barton Hills/Zilker for those who want Austin's most iconic neighborhoods; Bee Cave and Lakeway for Hill Country lifestyle buyers. Unlike Apple or IBM employees, AMD employees almost never live in Cedar Park or Leander — it's the wrong direction entirely.
Oak Hill/SW 78749: 5–15 min. Westlake Hills: 8–15 min via Loop 360. Circle C Ranch: 10–18 min via US-290/SH-45. Barton Hills/Zilker: 12–20 min via MoPac. Bee Cave: 15–25 min via 360 west. Lakeway: 20–30 min. Dripping Springs: 25–38 min via US-290 west. Downtown Austin: 15–22 min. Avoid Cedar Park, Leander, Domain area — wrong direction, 35–55 min.
AMD offers relocation packages for new hires, particularly for engineering roles. Packages typically cover moving expenses; senior roles may include additional support. Confirm specifics with AMD HR — if you receive temporary housing assistance, use that time to rent in the Oak Hill or Westlake area and learn the southwest corridor before buying.
Southwest Austin has more rental flexibility than the northwest tech suburbs, so renting 6–12 months is viable. That said, Westlake Hills and Circle C see consistent appreciation — the longer you wait in those markets, the more you pay. If you have a family and Eanes ISD is your target, start the buying process early; Westlake inventory is tight.
Westlake Hills: $900K–$2M+, Eanes ISD (one of the best districts in Texas), 8–15 min to AMD, extremely limited inventory. Oak Hill: $420K–$680K, Austin ISD (strong southwest campuses), 5–15 min to AMD, more inventory. The Eanes ISD premium is real — if schools are your priority, it's worth stretching for Westlake. If you want value and a shorter commute, Oak Hill delivers both.
Excellent. Eanes ISD (Westlake Hills, Lost Creek) is Austin's highest-rated district — top 1–3% statewide. Lake Travis ISD (Bee Cave, Lakeway) is outstanding. Southwest Austin ISD campuses (Oak Hill, Circle C/Bowie HS zone) are among the stronger AISD campuses. Dripping Springs ISD is growing fast with strong ratings.
I help tech employees relocate to Austin — including AMD engineers who want Westlake Hills schools, Barton Creek access, and a short commute. I know the southwest corridor, Eanes ISD boundary lines, and Circle C inventory. My representation is free to buyers.
Westlake Hills and Circle C don't sit long in the $500K–$1.2M range. If you're within 90 days of your AMD start date, reach out now.
