Welcome to Austin. Salesforce Austin is anchored by the Salesforce Tower at 1 Congress Plaza — downtown Austin's most iconic tech address, overlooking Lady Bird Lake. If you're relocating from San Francisco, New York, or another Salesforce hub, you're about to make one of the most financially significant moves in tech. No state income tax. Austin character neighborhoods minutes from the office. Housing at a fraction of San Francisco prices. This guide gives you the honest numbers.
Salesforce Austin occupies the Salesforce Tower at 1 Congress Plaza — a landmark glass tower at Congress Avenue and Cesar Chavez, directly overlooking Lady Bird Lake. This is downtown Austin at its most Austin: the Congress Avenue Bridge is one block away, Rainey Street is a 10-minute walk, and the Lady Bird Lake hike-and-bike trail is right outside the building. It's the only major Austin tech office where employees can genuinely walk to lunch on the water.
This downtown location fundamentally changes the Austin housing equation compared to the Domain/North Austin corridor. Salesforce employees can live in the neighborhoods that define Austin's character — East Austin, Bouldin Creek, Travis Heights, Barton Hills, Clarksville, Hyde Park — without any highway commute. Cedar Park and Leander are the wrong call for Salesforce employees; the neighborhoods that matter are south and east of downtown.
Unlike Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Nvidia — all of which cluster in the Domain/North Austin corridor — Salesforce employees have access to Austin's most iconic urban neighborhoods. East Austin, Bouldin Creek, and Barton Hills make zero sense for Domain employees. For Salesforce downtown, they're your backyard.
Most Salesforce Austin employees are coming from San Francisco or New York — two of the highest-tax cities in the United States. Texas has no state income tax. The annual savings at Salesforce comp levels range from meaningful to transformational.
California and New York both have significant state income taxes. CA tops out at 13.3%; NY at 10.9% (plus NYC city tax of 3.88% if you're in Manhattan — making the effective NY+NYC rate up to 14.8%). Texas has zero. The savings are immediate and permanent.

Salesforce Austin comp ranges from $90K for junior CSMs to $380K+ OTE for enterprise AEs. At those levels, central Austin is highly accessible — not just the suburbs. A mid-market AE at $200K OTE can buy a bungalow in East Austin or Hyde Park. An enterprise AE at $320K can buy in Travis Heights or Barton Hills. A VP at $500K+ can buy in Tarrytown or Clarksville. Compare to San Francisco: a Bouldin Creek home at $750K is a $3M Pacific Heights condo. Same Salesforce comp. Dramatically different life.
Central Austin neighborhoods hold value well. East Austin, Bouldin Creek, Travis Heights, and Barton Hills have consistent appreciation and a natural floor — genuine demand, limited supply, and proximity to downtown Austin's growing employment base. You're not buying in the suburbs hoping tech expansion continues; you're buying in the heart of where Austin already is.
San Francisco Salesforce employees almost always move faster on the buy decision than other cities. When you've been paying $4,500/month for a 1BR in SoMa and you're looking at $650K East Austin bungalows with a $3,200/month mortgage payment — the decision calculates itself.
AISD is highly variable — research by specific campus address. Near Salesforce: Mathews Elementary (Zilker zone), Barton Hills Elementary, and Travis Heights Elementary are well-regarded. High schools: Bowie HS and McCallum HS are the strongest in this corridor.
This AISD zone has some of the district's strongest campuses. Bryker Woods Elementary, Ridgetop Elementary, McCallum HS. Worth the 15–20 min commute for buyers who prioritize school quality within the district.
15–20 min from downtown on Loop 360. The most prestigious district in the Austin metro — Westlake HS in Texas's top 5. Homes $900K–$2M+. For Salesforce VPs and senior AEs who want Palo Alto Unified-equivalent public schools.
Given AISD variability, many central Austin families consider St. Andrew's Episcopal, St. Michael's Catholic Academy, Austin Waldorf, and Regents School. Tuition $18,000–$30,000/year — accessible at senior Salesforce comp levels.
Texas has no state income tax. Whether your Salesforce comp is salary, commission, or equity, none of it is taxed at the state level. For a senior AE with a $320K year — salary plus commissions plus RSU vest — you keep $36,000–$40,000 more in Texas than in California. Permanently. Every year.
In California, commissions are taxed as ordinary income at up to 13.3%. In Texas, they're not taxed at the state level at all. For Salesforce AEs with variable comp that can swing $50K–$200K in a strong year, this makes the Texas advantage especially pronounced — your best commission quarters are fully yours.
Texas property taxes run 1.8%–2.4% of assessed value. On a $750K East Austin home: ~$13,500–$18,000/year. Higher than California's Prop 13-capped rates, but significantly lower in absolute dollar terms than comparable California homes at $3M+. File your homestead exemption after Jan 1 to reduce assessed value.
Central Austin: East Austin, Bouldin Creek, Travis Heights, Barton Hills, and Zilker for buyers who want Austin's authentic character. Clarksville and Tarrytown for senior employees who want understated refinement. Hyde Park and Rosedale for those who want AISD's strongest central campuses. Unlike Apple, Amazon, or Meta employees (who cluster in NW suburbs), Salesforce downtown employees live in Austin proper — the neighborhoods Austin is actually known for.
At $200K OTE: ~$18,000–$20,000/year. At $320K: ~$36,000–$40,000/year. At $500K: ~$65,000/year. Coming from New York City with combined state + city tax, the effective top rate approaches 14.8%. Texas has zero. These savings are permanent and immediate from your first paycheck.
Downtown condos / Rainey St: 0–8 min. Bouldin Creek: 8–15 min. Travis Heights / East Austin: 10–18 min. Barton Hills / Zilker: 12–20 min. Clarksville: 10–18 min. Hyde Park: 15–22 min. These commutes are dramatically better than Cedar Park or Leander (35–50 min, wrong direction for Salesforce downtown).
Generally no. Cedar Park and Leander are optimized for the Domain/NW corridor — Apple, Amazon, Meta, Nvidia employees. For Salesforce at 1 Congress Plaza, those suburbs add 35–50 minutes of commute on MoPac against northbound traffic. The compelling Austin neighborhoods for Salesforce employees are south and east of downtown — and they're genuinely excellent places to live.
Salesforce typically offers relocation packages for qualifying hires and transfers. Packages vary by level and team — confirm with Salesforce HR. If temporary housing is covered, use that time to rent in East Austin or Bouldin Creek and experience the neighborhoods before buying. The central Austin market at $600K–$900K moves faster than most SF transplants expect.
AISD is highly variable by campus — research specific addresses rather than the district overall. The Barton Hills, Travis Heights, and Hyde Park AISD zones have genuinely strong elementary campuses. Eanes ISD (Westlake Hills, 15–20 min from downtown) is the most prestigious district in Austin and rivals Palo Alto Unified. Several strong private schools in central Austin serve families willing to pay $18,000–$30,000/year.
I help tech employees relocate to Austin — including Salesforce employees making the San Francisco or New York-to-Texas move. I know central Austin's neighborhoods intimately, I understand the tax math, and I know how to get you into an East Austin bungalow or Barton Hills home before your first Austin workday. My representation is free to buyers.
Good homes in Bouldin Creek and Barton Hills move quickly at $650K–$950K. If you're within 60–90 days of your Salesforce start date — or just starting to run the San Francisco comparison — reach out now.
